About Us

APKBZ exists because the home screen is the part of your phone you actually live in. You unlock the device forty, sixty, a hundred times a day, and every one of those moments passes through a single app: the launcher. When that layer stutters, redraws, or eats memory it shouldn’t, the whole phone feels cheap — even if the hardware underneath is excellent. We test launchers the way they deserve to be tested: as performance-critical software, not as wallpaper accessories.

Our primary subject is Smart Launcher 6, because its design philosophy is genuinely different from the grid-of-icons model most launchers inherited a decade ago. Automatic app categorisation, a search-first interface, and a single-page home screen are not cosmetic choices; they change how quickly you reach an app and how much effort the system spends getting you there. That difference is exactly what makes it worth measuring carefully.

Our Android UI Testing Lab

The lab runs a rotating bench of devices rather than one flagship. At any given time we keep a budget phone in the 3–4 GB RAM class, a midrange device with a 90 or 120 Hz panel, a current flagship, and at least one foldable, because launcher behaviour diverges sharply across those tiers. A setup that feels instant on a flagship can crawl on a budget handset once the OEM’s memory manager starts reclaiming processes, and a layout tuned for a 6.1-inch phone falls apart on a 7.6-inch unfolded display.

Every device is reset to a documented baseline before a test cycle: the same 120-app library installed, the same wallpaper set, the same Google account state, and battery optimisation settings recorded rather than assumed. That discipline sounds dull. It is also the only way to attribute a change in behaviour to the launcher setting we touched instead of to whatever a phone happened to be doing that afternoon.

How We Benchmark Launcher Performance

We compare launchers on three axes that map to what users actually feel.

  • Frame pacing. Using Android’s own frame metrics tooling (gfxinfo framestats dumps and on-screen GPU profiling where available), we record how consistently a launcher holds its frame budget during home screen scrolls, drawer opens, and folder expansions. A launcher that averages 90 fps but drops clustered frames during a redraw feels worse than one locked at a steady 60, and averages hide that.
  • Redraw behaviour. The classic launcher sin is the full home screen redraw after returning from a memory-hungry app. We force the situation deliberately — open a heavy game or the camera, exit, return home — and log whether icons and widgets repaint instantly, fade in staged, or vanish and rebuild. We note which setting combinations (icon pack size, widget count, blur effects) trigger it.
  • Memory footprint. We record the launcher process’s PSS memory at idle, after an hour of typical use, and after a heavy app session, on each device tier. The gap between a lean launcher and a bloated one is often 150 MB or more, which on a 3 GB phone is the difference between your apps staying alive and reloading every time.

Where a result depends on the phone, the Android version, or the OEM skin — and it often does — we say which device produced the number instead of publishing a universal claim. MIUI, One UI, and ColorOS each manage background processes and default-launcher privileges differently, and pretending otherwise would make our guides useless to half the people reading them.

How We Review Customization

Customization coverage follows a stricter rule: nothing gets recommended that we have not built ourselves on a real device. Every layout guide starts from a stock Smart Launcher 6 install, proceeds step by step through the app’s actual settings tree — long-press on the home screen, then Home screen settings, or the dedicated sections for icons, gestures, and theming — and is re-verified after major app updates. When a feature sits behind Smart Launcher’s Premium unlock or depends on a specific Android version, the guide says so up front, not in a footnote.

We also photograph and archive our own setups rather than lifting images from forums or other sites. Icon packs are tested with their masking behaviour, badge support, and dark-mode variants actually exercised, because a pack that looks beautiful in its store listing can fall apart the moment an unthemed app lands in your drawer.

Editorial Standards

Three rules govern everything published here. First, accuracy over enthusiasm: Smart Launcher 6 is our specialty, not our sponsor, and where it loses to a competitor — advanced per-gesture branching, for example, or the sheer depth of Nova’s backup ecosystem — we say so. Second, reproducibility: if a reader with the same phone and app version follows a guide and cannot reproduce the result, that is a bug in our article, and we fix it. Third, independence: APKBZ is an independent educational fansite. We are not affiliated with Smart Launcher Team, and we do not host, distribute, or modify APK files.

If you spot an error, a stale menu path after an update, or a benchmark you cannot reproduce, write to us at contact@apkbz.com. Corrections from readers are the cheapest quality control there is, and we use them.
